Dear Parents
We have had a most exciting week varying from music to storms.
Our five choirs, made up of over two hundred of our pupils, sang beautifully at the Eisteddfod and were awarded 3 x 1st Plus, 1x 1st and 1 x 2nd plus. The standard attained and the results received are remarkable and commendable considering the extremely limited time the choirs had to practise in between rehearsals for productions, sports events and practices and soloists rehearsals, let alone class teaching time in this short term. Our congratulations and thanks must go to all the pupils participating and especially to our Music Teachers, Mrs Van Stryp and Mr Hartnack, for putting up such a good showing of Bishopslea in such a short time.
Our soloists have also performed exceptionally well with the last four competing tomorrow. All soloists’ results will be included in next week’s newsletter.
We now look forward to our very special Eisteddfod Concert, on Tuesday 22nd March at 6:30pm, at which our Eisteddfod entries can be appreciated by all. All the choirs as well as the majority of soloists and Marimba entries will be performing at the Concert.
The storm on Tuesday afternoon was spectacular. We had hail, over 40mm of rain and gale force winds, unusually all from the North, all in just over half an hour. Although there was some damage from trees and branches falling, the damage was far less than we expected from such a severe storm. Our thanks go to Mr Taylor and his crew who continuously prune our trees to keep them healthy, and sturdy. Unfortunately, the only way to guarantee no damage from trees is to chop them all down, which is unthinkable.
We held the first of our Interviews for prospective 2017 ECD and Grade 1 pupils yesterday, which is always very special and bodes well for our future.
The two Inter-House Jump afternoons went very well with two records broken in the U10 and U13 Long Jump.
Tomorrow we will be holding our Inter-House Sports Day. The Grade 5 parents will be selling bacon and egg rolls for breakfast and the PTA will be selling refreshments all day and fish and chips for lunch, which it is hoped that all parents will stay for.
Although there are no afternoon activities next week, it will be another full week as the Interviews for the 2017 ECD and Grade 1 continue on Monday afternoon; our Parent/Teacher consultations, for which times have been forwarded to all parents, will be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons; the Inter House Public Speaking will be held on Tuesday at 11.00am; there will be an Athletics Team practice on Tuesday for the Inter Schools Athletics next Saturday; and the Infants Sports Day will be held next Friday.
Inter-House Sports Day
We are holding our Annual Inter-House Sports Day for all pupils in Grade 3 – 7 tomorrow, 12th March starting at 9.00am. All team lists are up on the notice board. Girls should be here by 8:30am dressed in house colour T-shirts, white socks, takkies, tracksuits, hats and name badges. They are also reminded to bring sun cream. They should meet on the netball field with their house captains for warm-up and roll call. Please would pupils not bring juice as this attracts bees to the tents. Water will be provided. Prize giving should be at approximately 12:15pm. All parents, family and friends of Bishopslea are invited.
Please note that parents, relatives etc. are not allowed to go to the competitors’ tents during the events and are not allowed to give the competitors drinks and food until the event is over. All girls should come to school irrespective of the weather. If the event is to be cancelled owing to the weather, we will make the decision after 8:30am when everyone is here.
Save the Rhino Competition
Congratulations must go to Hannah Wilson, Dominique Bruce, Anna Garden and Mudiwa Nyagura for organizing their unique competition to raise funds for the Save Valley Save The Rhino Trust.
Pupils were asked to buy and then decorate the Trusts red rhino horns. The response was exceptional with the decorated horns looking spectacular. Photos will be posted on the Trust’s Facebook page and are attached.
The competition raised $547:00.
Retirement Collection
One of our Chefs, Bernard Maradza, is retiring after 42 years of dedicated service to Bishopslea.
We are asking all pupils to bring a donation of at least $1 for an appreciation specifically from the pupils.
